JZ's Story
How Live In Care
Concerns about JZ's well-being, particularly regarding medication management health concerns, and general support were highlighted when her daughter visited from Australia. This led to her reaching out to Right at Home Alton & Bordon before she returned home. Due to time restraints and an imminent flight home we made arrangements to visit immediately to discuss homecare services.
JZ has a diagnosis of dementia and at the assessment was reluctant to have support and was unable to understand why her daughter wanted to arrange this. The primary goal was to ensure JZ's safety and comfort, allowing her daughter to return to Australia with peace of mind.
Initial Challenges and Interventions:
Initially, JZ was hesitant about receiving assistance and would occasionally be absent during scheduled visits, visiting her neighbours instead. The introduction of the first caregiver was met with resistance followed by a telephone call from a distressed JZ informing us her house cat had been let out as she could not find her. It later transpired the cat was home safely and was probably hiding from the newcomers. , through patience and persistence, trust gradually developed. Caregivers focused on building rapport and addressing JZ's reluctance, ensuring medication was taken effectively , accompanying her to appointments, and managing household tasks such as checking food expiration dates and accompanying Jz on shopping trips.
Transition to Live-In Care:
In April 2023, JZ experienced a significant setback due to a fall resulting in a spinal fracture, which led to an extended hospital stay and some time in respite. Recognising the need for enhanced support, plans were made for live-in care upon JZ's return home. This transition provided continuous supervision and companionship.. Regular communication, including visit notes and photo updates, offered reassurance to JZ's daughter in Australia, keeping her informed despite the time difference.
Positive Outcomes and Continued Engagement:
Since the implementation of live-in care, JZ has experienced significant improvements in her quality of life. With dedicated support, she has been able to participate in various activities organised by Right at Home and her local community, including outings to events and National Trust gardens. This increased engagement has contributed to JZ's sense of fulfilment and well-being, evident in her enthusiasm for future activities.
