A Day In The Life of CareGiver Jo in Alton & Bordon
Published: 24/01/2025
Jo joined Right at Home as a part time carer in April 2022 and loved it so much she changed her career and joined the company full time in 2023.
Jo is not only a fabulous carer but also one of community group facilitators in Bordon and is the Community Champion for the whole company.
If Jo is out in the community then her morning starts at 10am in Bordon to set up the Singing For The Mind group, where she leads the session for the community for over an hour. Singing For The Mind, like all of our regular groups, is open to the whole community to join but with a special focus on Dementia. Music is an excellent memory recall aid and you do not need to be a musician to join us.
Jo will prepare the lyrics and the music for each session and this is a really popular group!
You can find out more about our community groups in Bordon, Farnham and Fleet here.
After Singing for The Mind, Jo takes home her client who was also at the Singing For The Mind, where she makes him lunch and sits with him for a chat. Such a huge part of the role of a home carer is companionship which is why our homecare calls are a minimum of one hour long - no task is rushed and there will always be time for a chat.
After the client has eaten Jo will continue with her carer role helping with some light housework which includes the washing up and folding away some laundry. These may seem like small tasks but the impact is huge for our clients because it means we can enable independence and to be able to remain at home even when some tasks become unmanageable.
Jo will then write up all of the notes from her visit so that the visit is documented, we know our client is happy and safe and then the next carer to go in will know exactly what needs to be completed next.
Jo is a shining example of taking a leap of faith when she knew a career change to becoming a homecare assistant was the right thing to do!

Seeing a client who was a little low when you arrive and then after spending time with them - seeing them smiling and laughing is so very rewarding; sometimes we're the only person they will see in that day and listening to them is really important.
