Getting out in your community: Why it's important
Published: 10/04/2023
As we get older, being a part of our local community and getting out and socialising becomes increasingly important. It helps keep our mind and body active, while at the same time providing opportunities to make friends, become involved in activities, and connect with people. Connecting with your community can make all the difference in maintaining happiness and good mental health.
Here we look at some of the reasons why it is important;
Making connections
Connecting with our community is invaluable to a healthy and meaningful life. It is an excellent way to find companionship and friendship whilst enjoying a sense of belonging.
However, it can be more challenging than it once was, especially if we have mobility issues or require some assistance. Right At Home offer homecare services in your area and understand the importance of helping our clients to get out and about. Doing this has multiple benefits, such as preventing loneliness, meeting people, discovering new activities, or practising the ones you already enjoy. Our experienced caregivers provide care at home in the form of companionship and support so that you can continue to enjoy your independence and freedom. If needed they can accompany you when you want to go out, and transport you to appointments or to meet up with friends. There are many ways to connect with your local area, such as joining social groups or attending events. The Allen Gallery is one of our favourite places to take our clients receiving homecare in Alton and Bordon. There are often exciting talks and exhibitions to look around, and an excellent café for a coffee and a natter. Participating in activities with others provides great opportunities to learn new skills or take up a hobby, bringing even more joy and fulfilment to your life. You can feel connected, valued and supported with the right support network.
Utilising resources
In addition to connecting with the people, you can also benefit from utilising local resources such as support groups, organised activities, and classes. The Alton Community Centre is a great place locally, offering all sorts of things to get involved with such as seated Tai Chi, quizzes, and Bingo. A favourite for our Right At Home clients living with Dementia is the 'Memory café'. It is a great opportunity to meet others, reminisce, and relax with games and craft activities. They also run their 'Music café' which is a lovely opportunity to sing along to classic songs with their fantastic visiting musicians and catch up with friends. The Alton library holds many talks on interesting topics, as well as running craft clubs and demonstrations. By taking advantage of your local resources, you can build stronger relationships with those around you and help to create a better quality of life for yourself and your loved ones. With so many options, it's easy to find the perfect way to get involved and take advantage of all that your community has to offer.
Keeping active
Keeping active is essential as we get older, as fresh air and exercise offer so many benefits for both physical and mental health. Going out into your community allows you to soak up some sunshine, get in some moderate exercise, and enjoy the calming effects of nature. Whether it's a stroll through the park or a walk around your neighbourhood, there are plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Becoming complacent in our daily routines can be easy, so getting out in the local community is a great way to keep things exciting and explore new places.
