New activity in Bordon to help older people and people with dementia keep moving

Published: 10/10/2022

A new wellbeing activity is taking place in Bordon aimed at older people, particularly people with dementia. Love to Move is a monthly seated exercise class provided by the Alton and Bordon branch of Right at Home. The session helps people maintain and improve their coordination and strength and is based around gentle exercise that participants can do while seated.

Love to Move takes place on the third Friday of each month at the Beehive, Hogmoor Inclosure, Hogmoor Road, Bordon, GU35 9HN. The next session is on Friday 21 October from 3-4pm. Tickets are £5, carers go free and there is no need to book. The sessions are run jointly by Right at Home and Whitehill and Bordon Community Trust.

Claire Skilton who is the Registered Manager at Right at Home Alton and Bordon says: “We think of Love to Move as an enjoyable way to dust off those mental and physical cobwebs. The sessions are devised particularly for people with dementia, but they are suitable and enjoyable for all older people in need of gentle exercise.

“Keeping mobile as we age is incredibly important. It maintains and builds strength which aids independence and helps our confidence. It keeps us safer by preventing falls – such as by improving our balance – and actually helps our minds too, particularly our coordination. As a small group activity, it’s great socially. If any of those benefits sound good to you, why not try it out. More information is on our website or simply call us on 01420 481716,” says Claire Skilton.

Although the exercises in Love to Move are familiar, everyday movements, they are based on research that showed the most appropriate and effective exercises for older people struggling with their strength and coordination. The class is endorsed by the British Gymnastics Association and led by a trained practitioner.
