How a Visit to WheelPower Inspired Us to Do More

Recently, I visited WheelPower, a charity based in Aylesbury that champions the value of sport for wheelchair users. Their facilities at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement, cater to athletes of all abilities, from grassroots participants to Paralympians.
During the visit, I had the honour of meeting Martin McElhatton OBE, a former Paralympian and the charity’s CEO. Martin shared insights into the support and specialist care needed by individuals with spinal injuries and wheelchair disabilities. Witnessing young people thrive during a sports event was inspiring and reinforced the importance of accessible opportunities for all.
WheelPower organises local and regional events, allowing people with disabilities to explore various sports, from basketball to javelin. At the recent Paris Paralympics, over 60 of the 200 British athletes had ties to Stoke Mandeville. The charity’s dedication to fostering talent and building confidence is truly remarkable.
