Choosing Homecare: When Mum Doesn’t Want Help
Published: 08/11/2024
It’s not unusual for us to receive calls from sons or daughters seeking to arrange care for their mother, only to find themselves in the awkward position that, having mentioned it, Mum is resolute in not wanting any help.
Here at Right at Home, we provide exceptional homecare in Basingstoke and the surrounding areas. With an emphasis on person-centred care, we understand that the idea of care is a sensitive issue. So, today we are looking at the ways you can bring up the idea of care and support to help your loved ones maintain their independence.

How to Encourage Mum to Accept Support
There are several approaches that may help convince her that a little support could be beneficial. For instance, explaining the strain that constantly popping round to see her is placing on you. By having someone to assist her, you’ll be able to enjoy a proper chat when you visit, rather than always needing to sort things out.
Starting with Small Steps
If she remains reluctant, consider arranging just one visit a week to help her get used to having someone around. We have a few CareGivers who are particularly skilled at building relationships with Clients who initially resist support, and we often deploy these team members to help break down barriers. Once someone has experienced a couple of visits, they often discover how much they enjoy having a different face around to provide support.
Household Help as an Entry Point
If Mum is struggling with the housework, arranging for a CareGiver to come in once a week for light household tasks might be an option. The advantage of using a care provider like us is that all our team members are DBS-checked, and we monitor the quality of the work to ensure Mum is kept safe and everyone is happy with the support being provided. This can be an ideal way for her to get used to having someone else involved. We have also recently introduced a Dementia-Friendly Cleaning Service as part of our offerings.
Enjoying the Benefits of Regular Visits
The reality is that once we start providing visits, Mum often begins to appreciate the range of support options available. An added benefit is that once we become part of her routine, we can seamlessly increase the level of support if needed.
