SAD Syndrome

Winter can be a dark, miserable and lonely time of year. For the elderly, if they’re stuck in the house, even more so. The Winter Blues, more formally known as Seasonal Affective Disorder and commonly referred to as SAD syndrome can be a big problem for the elderly. Up to one third of the adult population is believed to impacted by SAD brought about by the reduced levels of sunlight during autumn and winter. Unfortunately, the elderly are more prone to being effected due to loneliness, poor health and social isolation.

So what can be done to help them?

Visits – Social interaction is so important to everyone. Pop round to have a chat, play a game of cards, do a jigsaw together, go through old photographs.

Diet – Everyone needs a proper diet to keep them well. A good nutritious diet helps fight off diseases and provides energy to keep people active. Support the elderly to eat well with a balanced diet.

Activity – Keep them active – get them out and about and in the daylight. Moving muscles and getting the blood pumping is good for everyone.

Hobbies – Encourage hobbies. Don’t let someone who is feeling down lose interest in the things they used to like to do. It just produces a downward spiral.

Not enough time?

The ideas above are all very well if you live locally and have the time to pop round to see an elderly neighbour or relative, but modern life isn’t quite like that. That is where the likes of an excellent care agency like Right at Home comes in.

For years, we have assisted our clients with all these tasks. Our lovely CareGivers know how important these things are to keep our clients well, both physically and mentally. They are well versed in providing stimulation and ensuring our clients eat properly.

Popular activities include assisting people to go for a short walk; taking them to a café or garden centre or, taking them shopping. It’s all good mental and physical stimulation. In the home, preparing a meal together can be a good way of ensuring a balanced diet.
