Keep Moving
The longer days and warmer weather at this time of year make me feel so much better; not only physically but mentally too. Throwing off the thick jumpers and ditching the coat makes me feel more invigorated. There’s nothing I love more than taking a walk along the canal or through the fields with my dogs enjoying all that nature has to offer.
One reason I suspect I feel so much better is that my exercise levels increase as I walk more. My heart pumps a little harder and my muscles get to see a lot more movement than when they are hunched up behind the wheel of my car or behind a desk.
Get Out and About
The benefits of gentle exercise for the elderly should not be underestimated either. The sad fact is that many over 65’s spend over 10 hours a day either sitting or lying down. The NHS believes that all adults over the age of 65 should aim to do 150 minutes of moderate activity every week. They suggest activities things like walking fast, water aerobics, doubles tennis or pushing a lawn mower as good examples of moderate aerobic activity. Sadly shopping, cooking and housework don’t count !
The good news is it’s never too late for them to start taking exercise. Obviously, the sooner they start the better but the impact of moderate exercise from whatever the starting point is positive. Physical exercise helps keep the body flexible and strong.
Asides from the physical benefits, regular exercise also reduces the risk of falls and if they want to stay independent as they move in to old age and still be able to get out and about, the answer is for them to keep moving.
Throughout the year, I encourage my team to work with our clients and get them out of their lounges and into the outside world. In the office we love seeing photographs of the clients out and about and benefitting from the exercise and mental stimulation.
A State of Mind
Right at Home started life in America where having additional support as people get older is just seen as a normal part of the ageing process. We seek to encourage the same attitude to care and our non uniformed approach means the support is discreet and our carers look like they are a family member or friend.
Our carers regularly take clients to the shops, the hairdressers, the hospital or wherever they wish to go. We have even had one client who was so desperate to go on holiday and stay in a hotel that she first visited over 50 years ago, she asked for her regular carer to go with her for 3 days. It’s all part of the service. Care and support isn’t just for those are housebound; it’s also for the more active in the community.
