Staying warm this winter with Right at Home Bedford
This January as part of our Stay Warm campaign, Carers at Right at Home Bedford have teamed up with a Watford Based charity called Small Acts of Kindness to distribute Winter Bags across Bedfordshire.
The charity have done a phenomenal job over the last few years in supporting those most vulnerable. This winter in particular, many have struggled to keep their homes warm during the winter months. Some were faced with the almost unimaginable choice between heating their homes and buying food.
The bags contained essential, practical items for older adults including a fleece blanket, thermal hats, gloves socks a mug and hot drinks. Carers from Right at Home Bedford are used to being out in the community supporting people in their own homes so were well placed to help distribute on their rounds!
How cold weather impacts your health
The cold can lead to health risks such as raised blood pressure which can result in an increased risk of strokes, heart attacks and falls and the bags are an intervention that can help reduce these risks.
Recipients of Warm in Winter gift bags:
- Are warmer in their homes with the associated reduced risk of cold-related illness or seasonal death.
- Feel less lonely and isolated.
- Have increased feelings of wellbeing.
If you know someone feeling cold in their home that is over 55, and living in Bedfordshire, you can nominate them to receive a Winter Gift Bag here: https://www.smallactsofkindness.co.uk/forms/nominate
