Taking David Swimming!

Benefits of Swimming

Swimming has so many benefits for people with disabilities, it is often accessible and can be a lot of fun too!

Being in the water is akin to being weightless, this is not only a joyful experience but it can help alleviate pressure on joints and muscles. It can build muscle strength and improve your heart’s health. Swimming can be an excellent social activity and it can help improve mental health.

With these benefits in mind, we were thrilled to be able to assist David in attending his local swimming pool for the first time in 5 years.

Introducing David

David is a wonderful Client of ours who we have supported since September 2021. David is very intelligent and has a great sense of fun and humour, he is always making us laugh and we thoroughly enjoy supporting him. David has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, despite this he is highly independent and enjoys a busy life, getting involved in as much as he possibly can.

How Right at Home Bishop’s Stortford supported David

It was a real privilege to be able to take David to his local swimming pool for the first time in 5 years. David used to love going swimming but this fell by the wayside for various reasons.

David’s local swimming pool had undergone a refurbishment as well as introducing some new equipment to make the swim possible.

One of Right at Home’s senior carers, Georgia, went in the pool with David to help with his confidence.
David managed to swim 6 whole lengths of the large pool which was incredible after so long away.

David said:
“I felt completely liberated, free!”

Right at Home are making this a regular weekly trip as part of the support package for David and can already see the benefit for him.
