Why I chose homecare

Growing up

I was lucky to grow up amongst entrepreneurial family members and friends of the family – I saw first-hand what motivated people. The freedom and the desire to create something on your own terms really stuck with me from a young age. I’ve seen the highs and the lows and I think this has given me a good sense of perspective.

I’ve always been a forward looking person. I knew as a teenager that I wanted to get married and start having children in my 20s (which I just about managed to do!). I also knew that I aspired to run my own business; however I wasn’t clear exactly what I would do – until now.

After graduating from University and training as a Chartered Accountant in the City, I moved into investment banking in 2007. This has given me a great wealth of knowledge, although I always knew that I wanted to do something different. In 2018 I began researching the next move, desperate to find that idea that I could take forward. Eventually I found homecare and I knew instantly that it was the right fit for me.

Homecare

Homecare allows people to continue to lead dignified and positive lives in what is usually the best place for them – their own homes. A dedicated carer (or as we call them at Right at Home, CareGivers) can be there to assist, whether it’s help with personal care, medication, mobility or day-to-day tasks. It’s not just about the physical help of course; our CareGivers will promote wellbeing and provide companionship. Making use of the local community and the services available is also one of my priorities.

I’ve seen first-hand how CareGivers make an amazing difference to people’s lives. I know how emotional and difficult it can be to arrange homecare for someone you love. I’ve also witnessed how the absence of a good CareGiver can have a detrimental impact. My granddad lived with dementia for years and it was quite painful to watch his deterioration. As a family, managing his dementia with no experience and a lack of knowledge was difficult. Despite the difficulties, there were some brilliant moments of clarity and humour which had a profound impact on me. I’ve long thought that with a different approach he could have lived with it better.

I’m really pleased to join the Right at Home network, the support is fantastic and there is such a focus on outstanding practice. I cannot wait to get started making a positive difference to people’s lives locally.

People often say I’m making a big change in my career and although in a sense this is right, I don’t see it like this. I really feel like I can use so much of the experience I already have to grow a new business which is both great to work for and also delivers industry-leading levels of homecare.
