Right at Home Camden - A Living Wage Employer
Published: 19/12/2022
At Right at Home Camden, Hampstead, and Golders Green, we are always looking for ways to improve the lives of our carers. And one way we are doing that is by becoming a Living Wage Employer. The Living Wage is an hourly rate that is set independently and calculated according to the basic needs of a worker and their family. It should be enough to cover things like housing, utilities, food and drink, other necessities and extra treats.
The current UK living wage hourly rate is £10.90, but we are committed to paying our carers a little bit extra. Our starting hourly rate is £12.00 on weekdays and £13.00 on weekends plus mileage, pensions and bonuses. We believe that our carers deserve a fair wage for the amazing job they do, and this is just one way we are helping to combat the cost of living crisis.
What is the Living Wage?
The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually, based on the real cost of living. The Real Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK and is currently £10.90 per hour. This is significantly higher than the government's minimum Living Wage of £9.50 per hour for adults over 22.
An adult working 40 hours per week on the National minimum wage would earn £19,760 per year and take home £1,417.75 per month. On the Real Living Wage, the same hours would result in an annual salary of £22,672.00 and a monthly take-home salary of £1,899.00
Right at Home carers would earn £24,960.00 per year and take home £2,080.00 for the same hours.
Why do we offer above the Real Living Wage?
We believe that workers should be paid a fair wage for their work, as this is the only way to guarantee that they are able to support themselves and their families from their work. If employees have to take second jobs to make ends meet, their work will suffer and they won't have the same enjoyment in life.
We also believe that a fair wage is good for business. When workers are paid fairly, they are happier and more productive. This benefits our clients and helps us to attract and retain the best carers in the business.
What does this mean for our carers?
Our carers already receive some of the best pay and benefits in the sector, and we are committed to ensuring that they are able to make a decent living from their work with us. The Real Living Wage will provide our carers with a significant pay rise and will help to ease the pressure as the cost of living increases.
We are proud to be a Living Wage employer, and we hope that other businesses in the sector will follow our lead.
