What is dementia?
Dementia is caused by different diseases that affect the brain. Dementia is not a disease in its own right, so the symptoms of dementia vary from person to person. It is actually an umbrella term which is used to describe a group of symptoms related to cognitive function.
Symptoms of dementia commonly include problems with memory, thinking, problem solving, language and perception. There are approximately 400 types of dementia, with the most common types being Alzheimers’ disease and vascular dementia.
Can someone with dementia live alone?
At Right at Home Cheshire East, many of our Clients are people with dementia who continue to live independently at home.
People experience dementia symptoms and their progression at different rates. As such, many people with dementia can continue to live alone for some time. In the advanced stages of dementia, live-in care or 24-hour dementia care from our CareGivers in Cheshire East can offer peace of mind whilst allowing Clients to remain in their home.
A C | Daughter of Client"Right at Home have been professional from the start. My mother, aged 94, has dementia and is not always cooperative. She is also quite heavy. The carers are friendly, kind and patient and do their best to make my mother comfortable. She loves them and they keep her very happy in her bed-ridden condition - no bed scores and she is always clean and comfortable when they are finished..."
Caring for someone with Dementia
There are common misconceptions about the outcomes for someone diagnosed with dementia. Many people believe that there are limited options for people with dementia and the only choice is inevitably residential care. However, studies have shown that quality care at home can have a real impact on stabilising the most common dementia symptoms. A healthy diet, suitable exercise and cognitive stimulation have all been shown to have a positive impact on dementia symptoms. So we work with our Clients to ensure their care plan meets all of these needs.

FAQs about our dementia homecare services in Cheshire East
Can a dementia patient be cared for at home?
With the right care and support from trained professionals, it’s realistic to manage dementia at home.
Many prospective Clients ask: ‘when should someone with dementia go into a care home?’ We believe that residential care isn’t always the answer, as many people living with dementia benefit from familiar surroundings.
We offer different types of care that work in tandem to create a personalised care plan for all stages of dementia. Speak to our team to discuss your specific circumstances and concerns.
At what point do dementia patients need 24-hour care?
24-hour dementia care at home can be invaluable for older people and anyone struggling with the late stages of dementia. There is no specific stage at which dementia patients need 24-hour assistance, as everyone experiences the condition differently. But full-time domiciliary care can provide peace of mind whenever caring for someone with dementia becomes unmanageable.
As standard, our dementia care services are based on an agreed care schedule. If you are interested in full-time care for dementia, we can combine various types of care. We can incorporate dementia specialist homecare into a care plan for live-in care or 24-hour homecare.
Do dementia patients do better at home?
Familiar surroundings and regular routines are key to reducing distress for people with dementia. Confusion and disorientation are common symptoms of dementia, so we aim to reduce any uncertainty.
That’s why it’s ideal for our Clients to receive consistent support in the familiar home environment. Working with the same specially trained CareGivers on a regular basis can provide stability and reassurance for our Clients.
