Right at Home Chippenham’s Work Experience Day with Kingsbury Green Academy Year 9 Students
Published: 04/04/2025
At Right at Home Chippenham, we were truly honoured to have the opportunity to join the Kingsbury Green Academy Year 9 Work Experience Day last week. This event provided an incredible chance for students to gain an insight into the world of work, specifically within the social care industry, and to discover the skills and dedication required to support others.
The day was designed to help students not only understand a job sector but also enhance their aspirations, develop essential skills, and boost their confidence in networking. 16 enthusiastic students, all interested in social care, joined us for a valuable learning experience. The work experience was conducted in school, where students were divided into groups and guided through various tasks to deepen their understanding of care planning and client support.
The Day’s Sessions and Activities
Caroline Evans, our Registered Manager, and Amy Purps, our Deputy Service Manager, led the engaging sessions. The day kicked off with an Introduction & Employer Overview. Students were introduced to Right at Home Chippenham and the homecare industry, learning about our services, how we support our clients, and the vital role homecare plays in helping people live independently. They participated in live demonstrations on CPR, fall prevention, medication management, and other essential aspects of care. This allowed them to see firsthand how impactful our work can be.
After that, the students took part in Scenario-Based Care Planning. In their groups, they were given tasks simulating to real-world work, to develop a care plan for a client. They reviewed a Care Act assessment that included client backgrounds, discussions, and goals. Students were then tasked with creating personalised care plans, considering the client’s needs, service frequency, and required support. They also prepared for the client review, a crucial aspect of homecare, which involves reviewing care plans after a certain period of service.
Caroline and Amy expressed their admiration for the students’ impressive engagement, dedication, and the exceptional quality of their work. They highlighted the students’ detailed thinking and thoughtful approach to each task, describing it as truly outstanding.
The Power of Teamwork and Feedback
After completing their tasks, students presented their care plans and key considerations for the client review in front of the team. The final session involved feedback from Caroline and Amy, where students were given the opportunity to ask questions, discuss their learning, and receive constructive guidance.
Why Kingsbury Green Academy Students Chose Right at Home Chippenham
We were thrilled to see that many of the students had chosen Right at Home Chippenham as their first-choice placement, each bringing their unique motivations and aspirations. Here are some reasons why they selected us:
- “I want to demonstrate my skills in caring for others, as I hope to become a therapist.”
- “I want to study health and social care at university, and this placement helps me develop essential skills.”
- “I love looking after people and want to become a nurse in the future.”
- “I want to help people and felt that Right at Home Chippenham aligns perfectly with my future career.”
Many students expressed an interest in fields like medicine, nursing, and healthcare—all of which are core to the work we do. Some mentioned their desire to gain skills in leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication, which are essential in the care sector.
The Skills Students Brought to the Table
The students were eager to bring a wide range of skills to their placement, such as:
- Teamwork and problem-solving
- Communication, creativity, and patience
- Listening and staying positive
Their enthusiasm and genuine interest in supporting others were clear throughout the day. Many students also shared that they are caring and creative individuals who love working in teams and feel good about helping others.
A Bright Future Ahead
At Right at Home Chippenham, we are deeply inspired by the students’ dedication, compassion, and willingness to learn. It’s clear that they have a strong interest in pursuing careers in the healthcare and social care sectors. We are excited to have played a part in helping them take the first step toward achieving their goals. We hope that this experience has sparked their passion for the industry and given them a clear vision of the important role they could play in helping others in the future.
We look forward to continuing to inspire and support young people in their career journeys and are proud to have been a part of Kingsbury Green Academy’s Work Experience Day.
