A bit of local history in Invergowrie and Longforgan

William Wallace is said to have stopped in Longforgan after he killed his first man in Dundee.  The 'knocking stone' upon which he may have rested is displayed at the McManus Galleries in the City of Discovery.

A temporary Roman settlement was excavated in Huntly Wood, north of the village in 1994. 

Stone from Invergowrie Quarry was used in the building of Nelson's Column and St Katherine's docks in London. 

Legend has it that the devil himself threw stones around Invergowrie to signify the end of days. Several large boulders are visible in the area, which scientists have attributed to glacial deposits. 

Places to visit and things to do in Invergowrie and Longforgan

The Scottish Antiques and Arts Centre, located a few miles north west of Longforgan offers an extensive selection of antiques and collectables.

Longforgan Parish church dates back to the 17th Century (the tower was built in 1690) and is on a site where another church it replaced stood from the 11th century.

Invergowrie's proximity to its larger neighbour Dundee means that visitors to the village will have easy access to local attractions such as Camperdown Park and its zoo, the Mills Observatory, the V&A Museum, Verdant Works and the Discovery Point. 

Downfield Golf Course, near Camperdown Park, is considered one of the finest inland golf courses in Scotland. 

Both Longforgan and Invergowrie provide ample opportunity for nature lovers to walk and cycle East to West along the nature reserve of the Inner Tay Estuary.  

Places to Eat in Invergowrie and Longforgan

Accessible from Longforgan and situated on the Main Street in Invergowrie, the Post House Coffee Co provides excellent food and drink, freshly prepared in house by their team of fully trained chefs.

The Invergowrie Inn serves a delicious menu of home-cooked food daily and offers a good selection of drinks.

Within a short driving distance of Lonforgan and an easy walk from Invergowrie*, the Landmark Hotel serves food in its Maze conservatory restaurant with views onto its Italian Gardens as well as in its lounge and bar.

*great care should be taken to cross the A90 at the Swallow roundabout. 

Events in Longforgan and Invergowrie
Each year, the Longforgan Gala Day takes place in June, providing games, sports and activities for children and their families.

For those with green fingers, the Glendoick garden centre, situated just off the M90 towards Perth, hosts regular gardening events throughout the year.
