About Exmouth
History of Exmouth
Exmouth’s history dates back over 250 million years and the town’s beautiful coastline makes up part of the Jurassic Coast, a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches to Dorset.
Exmouth was a small fishing town before the 1700’s, which had a small harbour that Sir Walter Raleigh began many of his voyages. Moving onto the mid-17th century, the town experienced attacks from Algerian pirates, who at the time were actively raiding the Devon and Cornwall coast.
During the 18th century Exmouth established itself as the first holiday resort in Devon, where holidaymakers were attracted by the salt water, beaches and views. In 1861, the first railway line was constructed into Exmouth, bringing mass tourism with it. This led to an increase in property prices and a growing tourism industry.
Today, Exmouth has a population of around 35,000 and is a regional centre for many leisure activities and water sports. The summer tourist trade is still substantial and it provides a great place for outdoor activities from cycling, walking and bird-watching to sailing, surfing and paddleboarding.
Explore Exmouth
You can start exploring the Jurassic Coast at Orcombe Point, this marks the beginning of the World Heritage Site, where you can find the Geoneedle. The red cliff and rocks are the oldest part of the coastline, dating back to the Triassic period.
Dive into the history of Exmouth with a trip to Exmouth Museum or visit A la Ronde, a Natural Trust property on the outskirts of the town. The unique 16-sided house, built in the 1790’s, has beautiful grounds with views of the Exe Estuary.
Exmouth beach is made up of around 2 miles of sand. The beach front hosts a variety of things to do including the Exmouth Lifeboat Station, established over 200 years ago with a new boathouse opening in 2010. If you are after food or drinks, there is The Bath House pub, The Grove or Mickey’s beach bar and restaurant, all situated on the beachfront. For some entertainment, there is Ocean Exmouth, an attraction with bowling, pool tables, an arcade and kids play areas.
We regularly take our lovely Clients for a walk along Exmouth beach, or trip to Tesco for a shop and a coffee at Kings Garden and Leisure Centre. If you or someone you know needs a companion for support and making trips in your local area, contact our friendly team... Tel: 01392 574 323
