Scott MacRae looked for a complete career change after years of globe-trotting as a Sales Director for microchip technology. Now owner of Right at Home Maidenhead, he has channelled his interest in technology into piloting a paperless operational system.
“I got used to waking up in different hotel rooms – not as glamorous as it sounds! It got to the point where I decided I needed a total change, so I did a psychometric test to see what else I was suited to.
“My first reaction to the quality homecare sector was: ‘I don’t know if I can do that.’ But I quite quickly realised that this was a business where I could really make a difference – that’s not something that I could say in my previous career, or the other franchises I was considering.
“In hindsight I should probably have looked at it earlier, as I love what I do now, and my work life balance has completely turned around. I walk to work, and see my children morning and evening, whereas before I missed a lot.
“I’ve built a team of people who are passionate about doing the job well, and we got some good awards last year, including a regional Fast-Growing Business award, and being recognised as one of the Top 10 agencies in the South East.
“Right at Home’s MD has been a franchisee, so he knows exactly what it’s like and is very focused on making sure the framework supports rather than hinders our ability to run our own business.
“I enjoy being able to work with Right at Home on key developments; our office was one of the first in the group to go paperless after we piloted the new software.
“It’s great – it allows real-time monitoring and communication, which benefits us as a business but is also fantastic for remote families – we’ve a chap in Australia who can now see who has been to visit his mum, how long they spent together, what they’ve done and how she’s been.
“Technology will never replace human care and compassion, but it’s great to get the two complementing each other so well.”
