Right at Home CEO invited to join BBCR4 show The Bottom Line

Published: 20/06/2018

Right at Home CEO Ken Deary this week joins a panel of franchising experts to talk business on the top-rated BBC Radio 4 show, The Bottom Line.

Hosted by Evan Davis, of Newsnight and Dragons’ Den, the Bottom Line: Franchising will shine the spotlight on one of the fastest growing areas in the UK economy.

Figures gathered by the British Franchise Association and NatWest show that franchising – using an established brand and proven model to grow a network of independently owned businesses – now contributes more than £15billion a year to the UK economy.

The Radio 4 discussion – to be aired this week – will look at the pros and cons of becoming a franchisee to start your own business.

The discussion covers what you need to do to become a franchisee (a business owner within a franchise network) and how you can expand a successful business by becoming a franchisor.

Deary, who was an award-winning franchisee for McDonalds before becoming a franchisor in the quality homecare sector with Right at Home UK, is a strong advocate of using franchising to minimise the risks associated with start-up businesses.

The NatWest bfa survey shows that while 90% of independent start-up businesses close or fail within five years, 90% of franchise businesses are still in operation after 5 years and 93% are profitable within their first two years.

Deary was joined on the Bottom Line panel by Subway franchisee Rachana Pancholi and legal advisor Roz Goldstein, whose company specialises in franchising law.

Deary said: “This was a great opportunity to highlight both the wider considerations of franchising, and the way that it has enabled us at Right at Home to spread the provision of trusted homecare services across the UK.

“By working alongside local franchise owners who are passionate about protecting their clients’ independence and improving their quality of life, we can deliver homecare services that have a really positive impact upon families and local communities.  Ultimately this has been instrumental in us becoming the most highly recommended national homecare provider in the UK.*

“After recording the show, Evan Davis told me the discussion was one of the best they’ve ever had, because of the positivity in the room about the whole subject of franchising.”

  • The Bottom Line on Franchising airs tomorrow (Thursday, June 21st) at 8.30pm and again on Saturday, June 23rd, at 5.30pm, with a podcast available via the BBC iPlayer.
