The initial idea

Mary, Sam and Leanne suggested that he visit the local health and mobility centre to look at comfy chairs with a recline function. Lynsey, David’s Care Manager, contacted his daughter who said that she would be delighted if we could arrange a trip out – she said that whenever she suggested it, he always felt it was too much effort. With some persistent encouragement and gentle persuasion, a visit to Hexagon Healthcare was arranged for one of Sam’s visits.

The shopping trip

David tried out lots of different chairs, chose his favourite and paid for it directly – Sam said he absolutely loved the independence of choosing and paying for his own chair.

A few days later, David’s son got in touch to say how happy he was – he said that his father was very excited about being involved in the whole process and particularly enjoyed the trip out and choosing his own chair; “He was telling me about it very proudly on the phone today – I think he likes both the concept, and that he was able to sort it out himself, with the assistance of his ‘ladies’!”

Making a long-term difference

As well as the rewarding trip to Hexagon Healthcare, David is now much safer in his own home; he can get in and out of his new armchair independently without losing his balance and his family can also relax, safe in the knowledge that he is far less likely to have a fall.

This seemingly small act of independence has had a big effect on him. His new-found confidence has led him to try Singing for the Mind at the local Farnham Maltings, something he was previously reluctant to do. On his first visit, David commented, “This is taking me right back. I’m really glad I came.”

Between them, David’s three carers worked together to encourage him to get out of the house. This simple shopping trip has improved his safety at home with immediate effect and also given him the confidence to increase his social activities which will have a long-lasting effect on his enjoyment of life.
