Careers in care in Guildford and Farnham
Published: 29/06/2022
A career in care at Right at Home GF offers not only the opportunity to progress and develop valuable skills but job security and working locally in a highly valued role with the potential for top rates of pay.
There is the chance for real career development, particularly with the opportunity to specialise or work towards taking on more responsibility. By working in homecare with a local, flexible employer, our CareGivers are able to play an active part in their own community while fitting work around their other commitments. As well as Guildford and Farnham, we cover Fleet, Aldershot, Farnborough, Godalming and nearby villages.
Providing care for Right at Home is about supporting clients with quality homecare services, helping clients to maintain their independence, dignity, and enjoy life, while building lasting relationships.
Why should I choose a career in care?
CareGivers at Right at Home GF work flexibly around shifts that fit with their home life. This works well for parents with growing families but can also be very beneficial for people at all stages of life wanting an alternative to the routine of a 9 to 5 job.
The Guildford and Farnham areas have a growing need for reliable, caring people to provide high quality care to adults living in their own homes, which makes caregiving a valued and secure job, in contrast to many other local retail or hospitality roles.
Best of all, CareGivers at Right at Home GF find their jobs rewarding and fulfilling. If you enjoy being with people, caregiving could be the role for you. Whether you are a fun, chatty person who is great at lifting people’s spirits or an excellent listener who is good at noticing when someone is not their usual self, these are skills that are really valuable in caring roles. So if this is you, why not consider joining us as a CareGiver?
Why be a CareGiver at Right at Home GF?
We pride ourselves on looking after our staff team. That means excellent pay (with the chance to earn more at weekends and bank holidays) and job security but also our commitment to invest in you as an employee. We provide mentoring and excellent training to all our staff to help you progress in your role in the way that you want, to add to your collection of skills and develop your personal attributes.
We like to make caregiving as interesting and rewarding as possible, for example by matching CareGivers with clients with similar interests or outlooks. We have also introduced staff initiatives such as Magic Moments to make a career in caring as enjoyable as possible for our clients and our CareGivers. Magic Moments is about helping our teams find ways to help clients get the most out of life by rediscovering long-forgotten hobbies or other experiences.
We have a particular focus on dementia care and even run local activities in both Farnham and Guildford. These are open to anyone affected by dementia and their carers, not just our clients and you could have the chance to help staff these from time to time. You can find out more about Inclusive Cricket, Singing for the Mind, Love to Move and the Sunflower Cafe on our What’s On Where pages.
Dementia is a really interesting area and understanding more about it gives our CareGivers the confidence and know-how to help clients to enjoy life as much as possible.
What will be my responsibilities and duties?
We offer a wide range of services to our clients, including respite care, dementia care, cancer care and end of life care so responsibilities can be very varied. CareGivers’ roles also include offering companionship and help with everyday tasks such as preparing a meal, helping clients get ready for the day or to bed. Clients might need emotional support, assistance taking medication or help with household admin, such as organising birthday cards for family members.
If any of that sounds daunting, remember that we provide excellent training, one-to-one coaching and mentoring.
But the great thing about caregiving is its variety and if you feel you have skills to offer our clients, please tell us about them so we can match you to a client who could benefit.
What does a typical day as a CareGiver look like?
You may have spotted by now that no two days are the same but there are some typical patterns, depending on what shifts you work.
Morning: An early morning wake-up visit to Kathleen to help her out of bed and get ready for the day - she likes to look her best. Help at the Sunflower Cafe in Guildford.
Lunchtime: Lena likes help in preparing her lunch and to clear up afterwards. She needs help with her cancer care medication.
Afternoon: After a snooze, Bob benefits from a short walk or sitting out in his garden but he is less steady on his feet these days and also needs some help with light housework. A companionship visit makes all the difference to his life.
Evening: Night time is a difficult time for Peter as his dementia can make him anxious. A relaxing routine helps and he needs help to get washed, use the toilet and to get to bed safely.
Over night: Maggie now needs 24-hour care so Right at Home CareGivers stay overnight as well as looking after her needs during the day.
