Ever Thought of Becoming a Carer? How I Found My Passion and Why I Love It
Have you ever thought about becoming a carer? I hadn't either—until I found myself on a surprising journey that led me to discover why I love this profession so much.
From Marketing Dreams to Carer Reality
I clearly remember the frustration of searching for a job in Marketing or a related field, only to hit a series of setbacks. “You need more experience,” they’d say, or “We only have volunteer positions available.” None of these opportunities would pay the bills or keep me financially secure.
After four months of unemployment and my savings dwindling, I found myself in a tough spot. I had to take any job I could find—anything to cover my expenses and keep me afloat.
I felt like I was losing my mind, and I began to regret my dream of moving abroad to open a bistro – What was I thinking?
Discovering a New Path: The Role of a Carer
While scouring job listings, I stumbled upon a carer position at Right at Home. At first, I was puzzled – coming from a different cultural background, I wasn’t familiar with this job. But the more I learned, the more I realised: helping people and getting paid for it? This sounded amazing!
I’ve always been passionate about making people happy and helping others. As a child, I even dreamed of becoming a dentist just to see people smile. I didn’t fully grasp the challenges involved back then!
Applying for the carer role turned out to be a life-changing decision. My first interview was nerve-wracking – although no prior experience was required, the anticipation was intense.
The Rewarding Experience of Being a Carer
My first visit with a Client was a turning point. Despite initial nerves, I found the experience deeply fulfilling. Learning about Clients’ preferences, discovering various ways to enhance their day, and seeing how small gestures made a huge difference transformed me.
This role has taught me valuable lessons about empathy and resilience. We all face our own struggles and possess unique qualities that make us who we are. Even on challenging days, the satisfaction of making a positive impact in someone’s life is incredibly rewarding.
Each day as a care professional is different, and the opportunity to make a difference, brighten someone’s day, listen to their stories, or bring a smile to their face makes this job truly special.
