  • Our care careers offer full training, progression, development opportunities and job security.
  • Right at Home Welwyn, Hatfield & St Albans provides high-quality care and support which helps our clients to maintain their independence, dignity, and achieve their goals. This builds lasting relationships and allows them to remain in the comfort of their own homes.

Why should I choose a career in care?

There are many reasons why people choose to pursue a career in care:

  • Flexible shift patterns – with varied amounts of support visits at peak and off peak times, you can easily fit in your own tasks, appointment and recreation activities around your job.
  • Rewarding and fulfilling - you will finish your day knowing that you have made a real difference to the lives of everyone you have supported.
  • Job security – with more and more people requiring support at home, you can be secure in knowing that you will always be in demand.
  • The chance to meet new people – All of our clients have their own unique stories to tell, some of them are amazing and inspiring.

So, why should you consider a career in care with Right at Home Welwyn Hatfield & St Albans?

  • We provide you with full training so you can be confident in providing excellent and safe care in your new role. To support you further and help increase your confidence, we then send you out shadowing with established carers and see how to work with each client.
  • You will then receive ongoing training with topics periodically refreshed. As guidance and advice from the various health services change, your knowledge will be up to date ensuring you will be able to provide the best care.
  • Further development is also available for those that want to further their career with diplomas and NVQ’s in Health and Social Care.
  • Training in specialist topics is available (like dementia, dysphagia, epilepsy)
  • Job security
  • Excellent pay starting at £11.50 per hour (uplifts for evenings, weekends, weekend evenings, bank holidays and special bank holidays) up to £23.00 per hour.
  • Flexible shift patterns
  • Variety- no two days are the same
  • Benefits – Auto enrolment, pension, paid mileage, paid training, blue light discount card, annual events, bonuses and more

What responsibilities and duties will I have?

  • Typical responsibilities of the requirements of a client will depend on where and when the support is required – Getting someone ready in the morning will be different than taking someone out to an appointment or assisting someone to go for a walk to get a newspaper.
  • Support doesn’t just stop with our clients, in most cases the clients family members also need help to ensure the best possible outcomes can be provided to their special someone.
  • Companionship – Most of the people we support love to chat so as best as we can, we try to match the personalities and interests of our carers to our clients. We wouldn’t want to put a lively chatty bubbly carer with a gentleman who likes to go for a walk and just listen to the sounds of nature.
  • Personal care – helping someone to get washed and dressed in the morning or in the evening to get ready for bed, is a fairly common task for a social care worker.
  • Medication support – It’s unfortunate but lots of people (especially the elderly) need help with medication. Whether it’s just being reminded to take some tablets at a particular time or helping them take the pills out of packets, it’s a part of the support our carers are trained to provide. We can not help with anything that required a syringe, those tasks are restricted to medical professionals like doctors, nurses.

What does a typical day as a CareGiver with Right at Home look like?

No two days with Right at Home are the same, but a typical day in the life of a full time CareGiver could look a little something like this...

07:00          Wake up and get ready for your first client.

07:45          Visit Annie a lovely 87 year old lady who needs help having a shower. She is very capable and can do most things herself. You’re really only there for her peace of mind.

09:00          Pop along to see Michael a 92 year old war veteran, who is in a wheelchair and needs help getting washed and dressed. In true military-style he has already picked out his own clothes and set them aside on his dresser

10:15          Round the corner from Michael is one of our centennials Janice. She likes soft scrambled eggs on toast for her breakfast (don’t cook them too much or she won’t eat them) she has her breakfast with a nice cup of Earl Grey tea (made properly from tea leaves). Janice also likes help choosing an outfit to wear as she likes to look smart.

12:15:         Next is a visit to Rose. First is a little food shopping for essentials and collect her prescription from the chemist, then make her some lunch and have a natter.

13:15          Have a break

15:15          Visit Kathleen (Kathy). She needs help with her medication (it’s mainly creams) and then accompanying her to the church hall where she meets up with other locals.

16:30          The next visit is Brian, he is a young blind man who needs help with light housework and then preparing his evening meal. It is amazing how good he is with a music quiz on his smart speaker.

17:45          Visit Kenneth and Lucille a lovely couple both with dementia who like to go out for an evening walk and have their supper and then be helped to get ready for bed.

20:00          Time to go home after a great day.

Each of our CareGivers will agree that every working day is unique, with new challenges and Clients differing wants and needs, there is always something new to learn. However, the one thing that remains a constant is the incredibly rewarding feeling of knowing that every day, you are helping someone to live a happier, more fulfilled life.
