Benefits of Hobbies for Older People in Havant & Petersfield

Published: 26/11/2024

Hobbies are more than just a way to pass the time—they are excellent for happiness, mental stimulation, and physical and emotional well-being.

According to research from University College London (UCL), engaging in hobbies is linked to numerous positive outcomes for those aged 65 and older, including fewer depressive symptoms, greater happiness, improved self-reported health, and higher life satisfaction.

But why are hobbies so beneficial, and how can they enhance life as we age?

What Are the Benefits of Hobbies?

Participating in hobbies offers a range of benefits that enrich your daily life. These include:

  • Boosting brain function: Activities like crosswords and puzzles challenge the mind, keeping it sharp and agile.
  • Maintaining physical activity: Certain hobbies encourage gentle movement, which supports overall health.
  • Leading to social interactions: Hobbies often create opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, reducing loneliness and encouraging friendships.

Exploring New and Old Interests

It’s never too late to try something new! Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn woodworking or model aeroplane building but never found the time. Or maybe there’s an activity you used to love but stopped due to other commitments. Now is the perfect time to rediscover those joys.

At Right at Home, we are dedicated to helping you or your loved ones explore hobbies that bring joy, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
