With the ease of access with a boat and the Geology of the area, it made the area a popular source of employment for stone and quarrying. This occurred for centuries from 1200’s onwards in Bembridge. Once cut off and considered an island in its own right, Bembridge was first known as Binbridge Isle, only accessible by boat or at a later date, by a causeway which was only accessible at low tide. By being surrounded by water and being only accessible by boat it allows the small but defensible island time to prepare for the many attacks, particularly by the French, it would receive through the years. By 1665 there were 3 ways in to Bembridge and then it wasn’t until the 1880’s that it joined the Isle of Wight following the drainage of Brading Haven.
Until the 19th Century, Bembridge was barely populated and mainly consisted of farmsteads, most inhabitants were involved in either agriculture or fishing, there were also a few tradesmen and craftsmen as well as smuggling- which naturally due to its secretive nature, it is hard to determine the extent to which this took place. By 1832, with thanks to Bembridge being mentioned in literature as a secluded yet picturesque areas, people became to visit and buy land for their seaside homes. In 1845 the church was built claiming Bembridge as a village, then in 1864 a railway was authorised to connect Yar Bridge to Bembridge. This leads us to Bembridge today as since, not much has changed.
There is something to visit on all sides of Bembridge which sits at the most Easterly point of the Isle of Wight. It is home to the Windmill, which dating back to 1700, is the last surviving one on the island.
On the other side of the village are the houseboats which are worth a visit to see the different shapes and designs, these look out to St Helens which was heavily involved in the history of Bembridge and it’s quarrying.
