Before the 19th century many forts that had been built to protect Sandown in which today you will find there are still evidence of, one now is home of Wildheart Animal Sanctuary. The Sanctuary appeared on the TV series Tiger Island in 2007 and 2008 which followed the lives of more than 20 tigers living at the previously known as ‘Isle of Wight Zoo’.
The Sandown Pier boasts itself along the beach with traditional amusements and fresh funfair style donuts. Alongside Sandown’s traditional seafront souvenir shops, surf shops and cafes, here you can also find Britain’s first purpose built Dinosaur Museum to share the wealth of dinosaur history that exists on the island, the pterodactyl shaped building is home to over 1000 of the best fossils on display.
The islands most recognised beach can be found in Sandown which sits beautifully in the sheltered bay. It’s long golden sandy beaches are popular with both islanders and tourists for summer days out with their buckets and spades, the band Take That even filmed their single ‘I Found Heaven’ in 1992 on the beach.
