Harehills, Chapeltown & Potternewton
Just north of the city centre of Leeds, Harehills, Chapeltown & Potternewton create a lively and diverse neighbourhood filled with cultural richness, historical charm and modern amenities.
Harehills, Chapeltown & Potternewton are some of Leeds's most vibrant and cosmopolitan districts. Back in the early 19th century, it was covered in trees, but with Leeds growing and surrounding districts such as Chapel Allerton becoming more popular, it was decided to clear the forest and make way for a ‘New Leeds”.
With its affordable housing, Harehills is often the home to many people who first move to Leeds. In the 1820’s it was home to the first wave of Irish immigrants, followed by Scots. By the late 1890s Harehills saw an influx of Russian and Polish Jewish refugees escaping pogroms there. Finally, the 20th Century brought Eastern Europeans from Poland, Latvia, Serbia and Ukraine, to be followed by West Indians, Pakistanis, Indians and Bangladeshis. In the latter half of the 20th century and the last few years we have started to see new arrivals from Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.
