Published: 10/09/2024

Finding the best part time role as a student can be tough as you try to balance a job on top of studying and maintaining a social life.

Working as a healthcare assistant offers rewarding benefits, especially for students who are looking for flexible hours, great rates of pay and an experience that can benefit their career.  A care job with Right at Home North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth could be the perfect part time job for students.  Especially if you don't want to be stuck at a desk or stood on your feet all day at a checkout!

If you’ve never considered a career in care before, why not get a head start and enhance your studies with a part-time CareGiver role at Right at Home North Leeds, Otley, and Horsforth?

Whether you’re studying Health and Social Care at Leeds Trinity University or Psychology at Leeds University or Leeds Beckett, this is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience alongside your course. We offer career opportunities for students from any subject background!

A flexible part time CareGiver job could be your perfect solution if you are wanting money for socialising and trips away but also want to give back to society in the process and make a real difference - every single day!

1. Work Hours That Fit Your Lifestyle

Full time and part time hours are available for CareGivers, from as little as four hours a week.  Our Horsforth branch, in North Leeds, offers great flexibility in your hours, meaning you can fit them around your university or college commitments.  In the lead-up to exams and deadlines or if you are travelling home, for example at Christmas, Easter or Eid you can pause work to focus on other things - picking it back up when you have more availability.

An important skill to learn whilst at university is organisation and planning ahead. Looking at your calendar a month in advance and blocking off specific time to study and work will allow a good work-life balance and prevent burnout.

Because care is 24/7, shifts are available at all hours including evenings and weekends, leaving your days free to prioritise your studies.

2. High Hourly Rates of Pay and Perks

At Right at Home North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth, we’re committed to paying our CareGivers above-average hourly rates of pay, regardless of their age or experience.  If you want to find out how much you could earn as a carer alongside your studies, use our Salary Calculator.  We also offer a great fuel allowance, pension, re-imbursed DBS and paid training and induction.

However....we know it’s not always about the money. The team culture is just as important.  Our CareGivers benefit from regular get-togethers and a family-feel environment.  We’ve also been awarded Mindful Employer of the Quarter 2024!

There are also some brilliant employee benefits on offer, including a generous friend referral scheme, one-to-one support, no uniform policy and high street discounts.

3. Learning and Development Opportunities and Long Term Prospects

Most people aren’t aware of the extensive career progression opportunities available in social care.  After graduating from university, many students continue their careers in social care or with Right at Home, and build on the skills and experience they have gained.

At Right at Home North Leeds we prefer to promote from within, meaning a CareGiver can be trained in specific areas of care or progress to senior and management roles; some of our team develop into office roles such as marketing, administration and recruitment. There are opportunities to suit everyone!

If personal development is what you’re looking for there are plenty of further education courses you can gain such as a Level 5 in Health and Social care as well as courses in Mental Health and Wellbeing, Presentation Skills, and Specialist Training Courses such as Dementia Support or Clinical Care including Catheter care and Gastrostomy care.

4. Staff Wellbeing

The wellbeing of our CareGivers is our number one priority which is why we have an employee assistance program. This includes a 24/7 confidential independent helpline which you are free to use to discuss uni, life, relationships and much more. This is complemented by an online wellbeing hub, CBT workbooks, and clinically validated assessments with support goals.

Additionally, we have a weekly staff newsletter, weekly check-ins, recognise birthdays, long service, and going the extra mile with our GEM awards.

We provide access to mental health resources and training in our wellness area and promote open communication around mental health, leading to an ingrained culture of empathy and understanding.

In fact, we care about our team so much, that it was recently recognised by Leeds Mind who awarded us The Mindful Employer of the Quarter.

5. Make a Difference Every Day

Our Clients and CareGivers are matched on their mutual interests in order to build long-lasting and meaningful relationships.  By being a CareGiver you are supporting Clients to live independently in their own homes for longer.

Some days you might be the only person Clients talk to, so they will value and appreciate what you do.  To work in a role so rewarding can shape who you are as a person and give you a real sense of pride.

Feel rewarded every day knowing you are making a real difference.

6. No Two Days are Ever the Same

There is no typical day as a CareGiver, each day brings new and exciting challenges and rewards.  For example, one day you could be helping a Client with their shopping or taking them for a walk around Horsforth Hall Park, the next day you could be helping them in the garden or assisting them to attend an exercise group in Rawdon or Horsforth.  You might also be lucky enough to be invited to accompany them to a Razorlight concert, a trip to the cinema or assist them with an overnight trip to London with their friends.  We support individuals of all ages from 18 to 99!

Our CareGivers always say how much they love the variety their role provides, they meet new people every day and love listening to their Client’s stories.  Individual visits can range from 1 hour to 5 hours or more, depending on the Clients needs, activities or preference.

7. Get to Know the Horsforth and North Leeds Community

As a new student to the Leeds and Horsforth area, it can be difficult to find your way around and work out where the best local places to visit are. As a CareGiver, you’ll quickly settle in and get to know the local community more.  At Right at Home North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth our CareGivers regularly get involved with local support groups such as Dementia Cafes.  Meaning they get a real feel for our Horsforth, Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon residents and their community spirit.

Client calls will help you find your way around the North Leeds and Horsforth area in no time at all and your Clients and colleagues might even help you find some local gems that you wouldn’t have come across in your typical student haunts.

As you get to know your Clients, colleagues and fellow carers you can also build up local networks and connections which could help you with university projects and future jobs.

8. Job Security

There will always be a need for carers.  In recent years the demand for care has skyrocketed as the general population has aged.  Carers are essential parts of our communities. Nothing highlighted this more than the pandemic when carers gave isolated and vulnerable people much-needed care and comfort

In fact, care work has been listed as one of the most recession-proof jobs.

Part time care work is therefore reassuring for students who are looking for a secure and reliable part time income whilst studying.  Job security is the last thing you want to be worrying about as a student.

Right at Home North Leeds and Horsforth is part of a larger established network of 700 branches worldwide. Meaning when and if you decide to relocate, there is the opportunity to transfer seamlessly to one of our other 80+ branches around the UK, to continue where you left off!

9. Training Provided - All You Need is a Positive Attitude

Our CareGivers don’t need experience in care, all we look for is someone with a positive attitude, willingness to learn and to pass our “Mum Test” (which by the way isn't an actual exam).  Plus all of our CareGivers must have access to a car and be able to drive confidently.

You’ll find you probably already have some applicable work experience that is transferable to care work including, compassionately helping a parent after an operation, looking after younger siblings, listening to friends and giving advice, and working in your local shops back home.

All these experiences can give you the important skills to start your career as a carer. These skills could include compassion, reliability, empathy, organisation and people skills.

All the specialist and technical aspects of care will be taught in your paid induction with our excellent Princess Royal Awarded Training and during the completion of your Care Certificate.

"Such an amazing, thoughtful company where it was a pleasure to work, I have recently stepped away for a few months to focus on studies but I wouldn’t hesitate to work for Anna and Rachel again in a heartbeat. The clients are simply a pleasure to work with, although some more challenging than others Anna and Rachel are only a call away and never hesitate to help straight away, to make sure top quality care is received.
