Falls Prevention Advice from Right at Home Leeds North, Otley and Horsforth

As we grow old the risk of falls becomes more likely, as our muscles and bones weaken and lose strength.  The effect of falls, sadly can be more serious for elderly people.  Thankfully, there are multiple ways we can help prevent falls from happening, in and around the home.  If you or a loved one has had a fall in the past, making little changes can help build confidence again and prevent further falls in the future.  At Right at Home Leeds North, Otley and Horsforth, we strive to support our Clients and their families to prevent falls at home across the North Leeds and surrounding area.

If you are concerned about the risk of falls, it is important you seek the assistance of a health professional. They take falls in elderly people very seriously, as they can have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of the individual.

Preventing Falls at Home

There are many ways you can make your home safer and prevent falls.

From small changes to your home to slight changes in your daily routine, there are lots of ways you can make the home a safer place to avoid falls.

Top Tips from Right at Home Leeds North, Otley and Horsforth to Prevent Falls at Home

Increase Visibility and Lighting in the Home to Prevent Falls

Poor lighting in the home can make it hard to spot fall hazards and a lack of visibility can reduce our balance

To improve visibility at home consider:

  • Installing additional lighting throughout the home, particularly in rooms that are darker
  • Use high wattage light bulbs and replace yellow light bulbs with white light
  • Consider installing motion-sensor lights on stairs, steps and outside your house
  • Increase stairway lighting to reduce any shadows that might cause visual confusion
  • Consider a free eye test on the NHS at SpecSavers

Stand Up Slowly After Sitting Down or Sleeping

Going from a relaxed position to moving around swiftly can make you lightheaded

Your muscles can also seize up as you’ve been stationary, so sometimes it is initially harder to move

When getting out of bed or up from chairs:

  • Take your time. Rushing could cause head rush, make you dizzy and therefore more likely to fall
  • Consider chairs or sofas that offer more support and stability, including sturdy armrests
  • Keep a walking stick to hand and use it to assist you as you get up. Remember to check the rubber foot, known as a ferrule, regularly to ensure it isn’t damaged or worn.
  • If you would like us to change your ferrule for you (free of charge) then please do call our Horsforth and North Leeds office
  • Avoid excess pillows and cushions on the bed, as these could fall onto the floor in the night, causing a trip or fall hazard
  • Keep clutter away from side tables in case you need to use them for extra support when standing. Messy tables can also cause items to topple off, creating slip or trip hazards
  • Put your bedside lamp on before standing up to provide extra visibility

Wear Suitable and Well-Fitting Clothing and Footwear

The type of clothing and shoes you wear may be increasing your risk of falls

To avoid this:

  • Don’t wear flowing clothes that may trip you up - use your local North Leeds tailors, such as Serious Stitchin’ Guiseley, to alter any clothing that might be too long
  • Avoid long necklaces, earrings and scarfs that could get caught on items such as door handles or trail and trip you up
  • Choose socks with rubber grips on the sole
  • Invest in a shoe horn to make putting shoes on easier
  • Ensure shoes fit well and provide a good grip
  • Choose shoes which provide room for thick socks in cold weather to keep your feet warm and allow for good circulation and feeling in your feet
  • Avoid walking throughout the house without any slippers on
  • Choose slippers with good grip on the soles. They should have backs and velcro fastenings
  • Maintain good foot health by trimming toenails regularly
  • Visit your local chiropodist, such as The Foot People - Guiseley Podiatrists to ensure your feet remain in good health. You can find recommendations for a variety of checked and vetted local services on The Leeds Directory

Make Your House as Fall Hazard Free as Possible

As you move about the house there may be multiple fall hazards. To avoid tripping on objects, carpets and steps:

  • Create wide, straight and clear paths with no clutter
  • Repair faulty steps and any loose carpets or coverings
  • Install carpets. They are less slippery than laminate or bare steps
  • Remove rugs if the room is already carpeted to reduce fall risk
  • Install handrails on the sides of stairs and steps - ensure they extend beyond the top and bottom steps, are round or curved and are a contrasting colour to the wall
  • Invest in bathroom doors that open outwards and avoid putting any mats in the way of the door opening
  • Keep items that are not used regularly in wardrobes or cupboards
  • Ensure curtains and tablecloths aren’t too long and don’t trail on the floor
  • Rearrange cupboards into a system that makes sense to your daily schedule. For example, keep cereals and dry foods that you may eat often in a cupboard with easy access
  • Clean up spillages immediately for prevention of falls
  • Place a water absorbent, non-skid mat in front of showers, baths and sinks and an appropriate rubber mat inside the bath or shower
  • Contact Leeds City Council for free equipment and a thorough assessment of your home.  Equipment may include: Grab rails, adapted chairs, raised toilet seats, hoists, alterations to steps, trolleys, shower seats and bath seats and much more.  Alternatively contact Care and Repair Leeds.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

It’s important to maintain a nutritious diet at any age, as the food and drink we consume directly effects our physical and mental health

Here are some small changes you can make to your diet that can be directly linked to falls

However, you can find lots more information about what a balanced diet looks like on our Healthy Eating Page Here

  • Review your Vitamin D levels - Being unable to get outside regularly can cause a Vitamin D deficiency due to a lack of exposure to sunlight. This can cause bones to become thin, brittle, weak or misshapen. Talk to your GP about Vitamin D supplements which can be an effective solution
  • Prevent dehydration - There are lots of reasons why the elderly may become dehydrated, such as forgetting to drink enough or not feeling thirsty. Keeping a water bottle with you throughout the day can be a simple reminder to drink more water. Try alternating your beverages between water, flavoured water or diluted squash, if you struggle to keep up with your water intake.  You can also eat more fruit, sugar free jelly and soups which will help further.
  • Increase your protein intake - Protein helps build muscle and keep muscles strong, but it can be difficult to get enough protein in your diet. Take a look at the NHS website which contains plenty of information on how you can include more protein in a healthy, balanced diet
  • Exercise regularly - engaging in regular physical activity helps improve your strength and balance. You don’t have to run a mile every day - try activities such as walking or some short exercise programmes such as 10 minute pilates or chair yoga. These are great exercises to improve muscle strength and reduce the risk of falling over.  To learn more about exercise and fall prevention exercises visit our Keeping Active article Here
