Birstall is within the Borough of Charnwood but situated closer to Leicester than its administrative town of Loughborough. The symbol of Birstall is a cedar tree (which is still standing), situated in Roman Road, originally this was in the grounds of Birstall Hall which has since been demolished. The tree became subject to a Tree Preservation Order in the 1960’s and is reported to be the largest cedar tree in Europe.
