East Goscote is a new village built on the site of a former British Army supply depot. This World War II installation which was constructed in 1940-42 and was known as the Queniborough Depot. The depot was operational from 1942 and was where munition cases of all types and sizes, were filled with explosives. The depot was decommissioned in 1959 and building of the first new village to be built in Leicestershire since the Doomsday Book, began in 1962 by local builders, Jelson Homes. Long Furrow, the road that circles the centre of the village also marks the original outline of the site.

The Mound is a recreational area, above the network of tunnels which was where the munitions were assembled, and is a biodiverse area owned by the Parish Council . At the time of the build, it’s understood that council representatives were able to enter the tunnels, but these have since been landscaped over so they are concealed from view.

The first families moved into the new village in 1965, but construction continued into the 1970’s, including shops and community facilities and a nearby industrial estate.

For local news and information about East Goscote, there is a magazine called Long Furrow.
