The village of Groby has been associated historically with the English Queen, who had the shortest of reigns, Lady Jane Grey. The Grey family lived in owned Groby Old Hall, and their estate also included Bradgate Park, where Lady Jane Grey spent her childhood, living at Bradgate house, which is now a ruin. Lady Jane Grey who was the ‘nine-day Queen’ in 1553, and the great-great granddaughter of Sir John Grey of Groby. Lady Jane Grey was executed in 1554.
Groby Pool is one of the most important areas in Leicestershire for wildlife, and has an unusual mix of habitats, including woodland, marsh grassland and of course the pool, this ecologically important area was noted as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1956.
There was no mention of a lake in the Domesday Book, though it has been referred to since 1297. It may have resulted from the damming of Slate Brook in the 12th/13th century by the monks from Leicester Abbey.
George Booth-Grey, the 7th Earl of Stamford and 3rd and 3rd Earl of Warrington employed architects and a local builder to replace the hunting lodge previously used by the Grey family with a Jacobean style house, Bradgate House, locally known as the Calendar House as the design included 365 windows, 52 rooms and 12 chimneys!
Historically employment opportunities in Groby have been mostly in granite quarrying and farming.
