Houghton on the Hill

Right at Home Loughborough delivers excellent care in the home to clients in Houghton on the Hill.

The village of Houghton on the Hill is in the Harborough district of Leicestershire and is just over six miles east of Leicester on the A47.

The majority of Houghton was situated along Main Street, however developments starting in the 1950’s saw the village expand to the east and west. Main Street is also where the two churches are situated, the Methodist Chapel and the Anglican Parish Church of St Catharine’s.

The closest railway to Houghton was at Ingarsby around two miles away. The station was called ‘Ingarsby for Houghton on the Hill’, however the line closed in 1954. The 747 bus service between Leicester and Uppingham is the only public transport serving the village and has been under threat recently and a ‘Use It or Lose It’ campaign was run, which resulted in the service being saved, though it is quite reduced.

The village has many amenities and interest groups as well as a Primary School. There is a Co-op, Post Office / newsagent, pharmacy, two pubs, a garage and a petrol station, chip shop and beauty salons. The Village Hall is well used by a variety of groups including exercise classes and the Scout Group. Houghton playing fields has a number of football pitches a Pavilion and Tennis Club. There is also a Cricket Club and a Bowls Club, and Petanque is played at the Old Black Horse Pub.

For information about the many local groups, the Parish Council, village news and adverts from local businesses, the Houghton News is published monthly.
