The town of Shepshed, previously known names such as Sheepshed and Sheepshead because of its link with the wool industry, it is the largest town in Charnwood after the town of Loughborough
There are links with William the Conqueror with land being given to his half-brother, Odo of Bayeux, which included the Parish Church of St Botolph which is in the centre and oldest part of the town.
During the 1700’s the last remaining common land of the town, approximately 2,000 acres, was enclosed and divided among the principal commoners of the village.
Shepshed was briefly linked by canal to Loughborough, and to the West Leicestershire coalmines, when the Charnwood Forest Canal was opened in 1798. However, the dam at Blackbrook Reservoir, part of the canal collapsed, this caused the intense flooding of Shepshed and Loughborough. At the start of the 19th century the canal was abandoned as it was uneconomical. In 1883 the Charnwood Forest railway was opened but ceased services for passengers in the 1930”s and closed to freight in the 1960’s.
Shepshed has successful football, cricket and rugby football teams and a wide variety of clubs and activities, as well as a range of shops, cafes and public houses.
