Kayleigh's Story
Ongoing Assistance and Achieving Outcomes
Kayleigh was admitted to hospital in 2014 for a routine appendix operation at the age of 22, and a post-op infection triggered a strong reaction, resulting in fibromyalgia, headaches and a weakness on her left side. Eventually, after many tests, she was diagnosed with functional neurological disorder.
Kayleigh married Michael in 2016 and enlisted the services of Right at Home Mid Sussex in early 2017, when she was sometimes wheelchair bound or using crutches to get around. She needed help with medication, meal preparation, personal care and companionship while Michael was at work and it became even more essential when Kayleigh became pregnant. Right at Home supported Kayleigh and Michael throughout her pregnancy, assisting with scans, ensuring a balanced nutritious diet and helping Kayleigh plan how she would manage the labour and with a baby. During the pregnancy, unfortunately Kayleigh suffered from Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) further restricting her mobility.
In January 2018, after a 36 hour labour, Imogen Lily was born weighing 7lbs 15oz. Imogen (or Immy as she is known) provided a huge impetus to Kayleigh to recover as much mobility and independence as possible.
With Neuro-physiotherapy, swimming and neuro rehab advice, Right at Home assisted Kayleigh with a plan to achieve her long-term outcomes. By setting small interim targets, Kayleigh made strides towards independence. Short term goals were washing her own hair, assisting with meal preparation, managing to put her own socks on, going to the gym, going swimming and baking. All these tasks were able to develop into longer term goals, such as putting on her own trousers and ultimately dressing herself entirely, cooking her own meals, etc. As a mark of Kayleigh's determination, her success was measured when her crutches were replaced with a walking stick.
However, Christmas 2018 saw a backwards step when Kayleigh was hospitalised, and she was dependent on a zimmer frame for all her mobility.
But with Kayleigh's determination, support from Right at Home and an active 18 month old to look after, Kayleigh turned a corner, and she went from strength to strength in the months that followed. In July 2019, Kayleigh decided that she no longer required the services of carers, and she is in the process of joining Right at Home Mid Sussex as a CareGiver herself, with a unique insight of how great carers can make a difference in so many ways.
Annabelle's Story
Short-term Care and Assistance
Annabelle, a very independent professional lady, had lived in a local retirement village for 6 years, and had built a great social life since being widowed. However after injuring her leg as the result of a fall her mobility and balance were greatly affected, as was her confidence.
Our Registered Manager visited Annabelle in hospital and did a full assessment of her wants and needs, with an emphasis on rebuilding her confidence in her own abilities.
Daily visits from Caregivers provided personal care, regular healthy meals and help with exercises to strengthen and speed up her recovery, as well as companionship. In addition, they were able to keep Annabelle's flat clean and tidy. Throughout her recovery, the CareGivers gradually encouraged Annabelle to pick up the reins of domestic tasks, ensuring that they found alternative methods to accomplish anything that Annabelle could not safely do alone.
While she was recovering, Right at Home Mid Sussex provided numerous companionship and housekeeping services to Annabelle, including:
- Transportation
- Bringing in newspapers / mail
- Companionship
- Light housekeeping
- Grocery shopping
- Cooking
- Washing dishes
- Laundry services
- Running errands
- Range of motion exercises
After a period of convalescence at home and a couple of setbacks requiring urgent responsive assistance, Annabelle was eventually able to regain complete independence. In fact she was confident and well enough to dispense with her package of care just in time for her to celebrate a Christmas party in London with her former colleagues!
