Alzheimer's Awareness and Local Support in Nottingham
Published: 21/09/2024
Dementia is one of the most significant health challenges facing the UK today. Currently, over 900,000 people in the country live with this condition, and by 2040, this number is expected to rise to a staggering 1.6 million. In our own city of Nottingham, the reality of dementia hits close to home. By 2035, over 4,000+ people here could be living with this condition. This growing number highlights the importance of early detection, education, and local community involvement.
At Right at Home Nottingham North, we recognise the profound impact dementia has on our city. It affects not just the individuals diagnosed but also their families, friends, and support networks. That's why we’re committed to raising awareness and providing practical help to ensure that those affected by dementia have access to the resources they need.
What We’re Doing to Help
Right at Home Nottingham North continues to help Clients live well with Alzheimer’s and dementia through quality care and support. All of our CareGivers complete dementia-specific training as part of their induction programme. As a result, our specialist CareGivers know how to develop suitable care plans to manage and help slow down the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
At Right at Home Nottingham North, we also work closely with the Alzheimer’s Society and our official Dementia Friends Champions to deliver free information and awareness sessions to businesses and individuals throughout the local Nottingham community. We help people to understand what it is like living with dementia.
These sessions are more than just informative – they create a supportive environment where attendees can ask questions, share experiences, and gain practical advice. Whether you are a carer, family member, or simply someone who wants to learn more, these sessions offer vital tools and insights to help those affected by Alzheimer's.
If you are based in Nottingham and would like to book a session with a Dementia Friends Champion, please contact us on 0115 666 8640 for more information.
Local Resources for Alzheimer's and Dementia Support
Our efforts are just one part of the larger support system here in Nottingham. The city is home to several fantastic initiatives and groups dedicated to supporting those affected by dementia. These groups not only provide practical assistance but also create a sense of community and belonging, reminding individuals that they are not alone in their journey.
Here are some of the key local resources available:
- Singing for the Brain Gedling: Combines the joy of singing with cognitive stimulation, offering a fun and therapeutic experience for dementia patients.
- Memory Café at Good Shepherd Church: A safe, social space where individuals with dementia and their caregivers can connect, share experiences, and find support.
- Dementia Choir Wollaton: Harnesses the power of music to improve cognitive health and offer emotional support for those living with dementia.
- Forget Me Notts at Trent Bridge: A programme offering activities and events tailored to support individuals with dementia and their families.
- Radford Care Group: Provides essential training, support, and guidance for caregivers, ensuring they have the resources needed to care for their loved ones.
Why Raising Awareness Matters
Dementia is often misunderstood, and too many people feel isolated or unsure of how to help. By spreading awareness and offering local resources, we can change that narrative. Early detection is crucial in ensuring that those with dementia receive the care they need, and community support plays a vital role in this process.
Our mission at Right at Home Nottingham is to contribute to a compassionate and informed community.
How You Can Help
- Learn the signs: Educating yourself on the early signs of dementia can help with early detection. Knowing what to look for and encouraging others to seek help can make a significant difference.
Our approach is about helping you reclaim precious moments with your loved ones so that instead of worrying about their bad days, you can celebrate their good days. Most of all, we want to be there for both of you so you don't have to do it alone.
