Tony's Story

With a ‘never give in spirit’ we think Tony is an inspiration to those feeling isolated and maybe lacking in confidence, after a life changing diagnosis.

Living with Alzheimer’s and with the support of his family he actively sought out local social groups where he could potentially connect with likeminded people. Now, he can share his poetry, a creative pursuit that helps him maintain cognitive function and recall precious memories.

Tony's journey demonstrates the power of staying active and the benefits of his persistence’s finding the right social activities he now enjoys on a weekly basis.

Here are our top tips to finding the right social groups:

1. Find likeminded people

Start by reflecting on your hobbies, passions, and interests. This will perhaps help you narrow down potential suitable local groups. Platforms like Facebook and online forums can offer a plethora of groups.

2. Be Patient

Building meaningful connections can take time. Don't be to discouraged if you don't find your perfect group immediately. Continue exploring different options and give yourself time to connect with people. Pay attention to the group's atmosphere and the interactions between members. Ensure that the group's values and dynamics align with your own.

3. Don't be afraid to try new things

Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to finding new and exciting social groups. Try a group that you might not normally consider. We feel it is better to have a few close connections than many superficial ones. Focus on building genuine relationships with likeminded people.
