At Right at Home Portsmouth, we have the privilege of supporting incredible individuals on their journeys to independence. One such inspiring client is Mr A, who is making great strides in his recovery from a brain injury, demonstrating resilience, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to regaining his independence.
A Hands-On Achievement: Securing His Home 🏡🔑
Recently, Mr A was determined to secure his front door, taking the lead on changing the lock himself. Recognising the opportunity for both a practical challenge and a personal milestone.
With focus and perseverance, Mr A tackled the job head-on. As he encountered unexpected obstacles, he problem-solved quickly, drawing on his past knowledge and adapting as needed. He even reflected afterward on how pre-drilling holes could have made the task easier - showing great self-awareness and a willingness to learn from the experience.
Though he noted that he wasn’t as quick as he used to be, his determination and “never give up” attitude carried him through. With his support worker, Angela, assisting where needed - passing tools, bracing the door, and offering encouragement. Mr A successfully secured his home. The result? A safe and secure front door and a well-earned sense of accomplishment!
Building Confidence and Independence
But Mr A didn’t stop there. After completing the lock, he went on to sand and paint the door frame, as well as tackle three to four loads of laundry—a significant achievement in itself! That evening, he slept soundly for the first time in a while, proof that a fulfilling day’s work can bring peace of mind.
His dedication to regaining independence shines through in everything he does. From taking charge of his home environment to reflecting on ways to improve, Mr A is proving every day that he is capable, determined, and strong.
