A Defining Moment for Social Care: Reflections on the Providers Unite March

Published: 13/03/2025

This week, Right at Home Reigate and Crawley, MD took part in the first-ever protest, joining hundreds of care providers at the Providers Unite march. It was a powerful and emotional experience, highlighting the deep frustrations felt across our sector. Despite our commitment to delivering exceptional care, the financial pressures imposed by government policies are making it increasingly difficult to sustain our services.

The Autumn Budget has placed even greater strain on an already struggling industry:

🔹 Employers’ National Insurance increased by 1.2%, now at 15%

🔹 NI threshold lowered from £9,100 to £5,000, increasing employer costs

🔹 National Living Wage rose by 6.7%, now £12.21 (21+) & £10 (18+)

🔹 With over 70% of care costs tied to staffing, many providers are at risk

Despite these rising costs, many local councils continue to fund home care at unsustainable rates—some as low as £18 per hour, despite the Homecare Association’s recommended £32.50. As a result, 22% of care businesses are projected to close this year, leaving vulnerable clients without essential support.

The march was more than just a protest; it was a stand for the future of social care. A clear message was sent to the government: enough is enough. Without urgent action, more businesses will collapse, and those in need will be left without care.

I am incredibly proud to have stood alongside my colleagues from Right at Home, all of whom are passionate about protecting our sector. A huge thank you to Providers Unite for organising such a meaningful event and to Right at Home UK for encouraging participation.

The fight for fair funding and sustainable care continues. Now is the time for change. #ProvidersUnite #FairPayForCare #SocialCareCrisis
