Supporting with Rehabilitation at Home: How Our Team Helped Mrs B Regain Her Confidence and Mobility
Published: 14/04/2025
At Right at Home Reigate and Crawley, we’re proud to deliver flexible, person-centred home care that evolves with our Clients’ changing needs. For many older adults, recovery and regaining independence at home can feel overwhelming—but with the right support and gentle encouragement, great progress is possible.
This case study highlights the journey of Mrs B, a fiercely independent Client who faced physical and emotional challenges after a hospital stay. With patience, clinical insight, and compassionate care, our team helped her regain control of her daily routine and reach her goals—on her own terms.
A Personalised Care Journey
Mrs B began receiving care from Right at Home Reigate and Crawley, following her discharge from hospital. Her family were understandably concerned about the risk of falls, poor nutrition, skin integrity issues, and low mood. Mrs B had always valued her independence, so accepting help was a big step for her.
Through consistent, compassionate care and by building trust, our CareGivers gradually helped Mrs B feel safe and supported. With her permission, we began working closely with her District Nurse to support the management of leg lesions—monitoring dressings, washing, and applying prescribed creams.
Setting Goals for Independence
Mrs B’s personal goals were simple but meaningful:
- To shower independently again
- To visit Redhill town centre on her own
We supported her first goal through joint visits with her community Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist, ensuring her safety while waiting for wounds to heal. Once the dressing care was complete, our team arranged for a reassessment, and a shower seat was installed. A full risk assessment confirmed Mrs B could now enjoy her daily shower safely.
Later, we focused on her second goal: being able to walk outdoors independently. Apurva Sharma, our Managing Director and a qualified Physiotherapist, carried out a comprehensive mobility assessment using different walking aids. With a structured mobility plan, supervised support from our CareGivers, and lots of encouragement, Mrs B soon began taking short walks on her own. Progressing to walking to the town centre under supervision and then independently.
Today, she takes the bus into Redhill town centre by herself—and enjoys her daily shower with confidence.
The Power of Rehab and Positive Risk Taking
Mrs B’s story is a brilliant example of how Rehab at home can lead to lasting, life-enhancing results. Our care team carefully balanced clinical support with positive risk taking, always working within professional guidance and involving health partners along the way.
We also recognised early warning signs—such as changes in skin condition—and escalated concerns appropriately. This played a huge part in preventing further deterioration and empowering Mrs B’s safe recovery at home.
Home Care That Adapts as Needs Change
At Right at Home Reigate and Crawley, our support evolves with each Client’s journey. Today, Mrs B receives just one visit a day to help with her morning routine—far from the intensive support she once needed. Her story reminds us of what’s possible when high-quality care is matched with kindness, consistency and a genuine belief in each person’s potential.
