What is dementia?

Dementia is caused by different diseases that affect the brain. Dementia is not a disease in its own right, so the symptoms of dementia vary from person to person.  It is actually an umbrella term which is used to describe a group of symptoms related to cognitive function.

Symptoms of dementia commonly include problems with memory, thinking, problem solving, language and perception.

There are approximately 400 types of dementia, with the most common types being Alzheimers’ disease and vascular dementia.

"My father has complex needs and advanced dementia. I spoke to the team at Right at Home Reigate & Crawley and they understood what we needed and recruited the right carers to suit my dad’s needs. They really went the extra mile and I am grateful."

Caring for someone with dementia

There are common misconceptions about the outcomes for someone diagnosed with dementia. Many people believe that there are limited options for people with dementia and the only choice is inevitably residential care.

However, studies have shown that quality care at home can have a real impact on stabilising the most common dementia symptoms. A healthy diet, suitable exercise and cognitive stimulation have all been shown to have a positive impact on dementia symptoms. So we work with our Clients to ensure their care plan meets all of these needs.

Our CareGivers and Clients often visit Reigate Park together. Our aim is to provide the best possible care whilst also meeting our Clients’ personal choices and needs.

FAQs about our homecare for dementia

Can a dementia patient be cared for at home?

With the right care and support from trained professionals like our Reigate & Crawley-based CareGivers, it’s realistic to manage dementia at home.

Many prospective Clients ask us: ‘when should someone with dementia go into a care home?’. We believe that residential care isn’t always the answer, as many people living with dementia benefit from familiar surroundings.

We offer different types of care that work in tandem to create a personalised care plan for all stages of dementia. Contact our team in Reigate & Crawley to discuss your specific circumstances and any concerns you may have.

At what point do dementia patients need 24-hour care?

24-hour dementia care at home can be invaluable for older people and anyone struggling with the late stages of dementia. There is no specific stage at which dementia patients need 24-hour assistance, as everyone experiences the condition differently. But full-time domiciliary care can provide peace of mind whenever caring for someone with dementia becomes unmanageable.

At Right at Home Reigate & Crawley, our dementia care services are based on an agreed care schedule. If you are interested in full-time care for a dementia patient, we can combine various types of care. We can allocate specialist CareGivers across Reigate & Crawley to incorporate dementia specialist homecare into a care plan for live-in care or 24 hour homecare.

Can someone with dementia live alone?

At Right at Home Reigate & Crawley, many of our Clients are people with dementia who continue to live independently at home.

People experience dementia symptoms and their progression at different rates. As such, many people with dementia can continue to live alone for some time

In the advanced stages of dementia, live-in care or 24-hour dementia care from our CareGivers in Reigate & Crawley can offer peace of mind whilst allowing Clients to remain in their home.
