At Right at Home Solent, we conduct CareGiver inductions for all new staff, including office staff. This week, I took part and will share what each day looks like.

Day 1

On day one, we begin by meeting the rest of the group during the induction and doing an icebreaker. This helps everyone feel comfortable with each other and allows us to learn things about each other too.

We then go through the workbook provided, which is in a folder along with other necessary documents like payroll details and emergency contact information. During this process, we worked with one of our directors, Kev, and discussed Right at Home's company values, team members, and their job responsibilities.

After an exciting morning of learning, we take a break for lunch. Our lovely office manager, Ali, prepares a spread of food for the group, and will sometimes pick up some treats from the local bakery.

In the afternoon, we dive back into the workbook with our care manager, Leighann. We talk through things such as communication styles, abuse, and personal hygiene.

To wrap up the day, we go through some important document checks with our recruitment assistant, Jazz. She checks to ensure she has all the required documents to submit our DBS checks.

Day 2

On the second day of the induction, we started by jumping straight back into the workbook with Leighann. Today, we looked at dementia, fire prevention, and food safety. It was so eye-opening and interesting to learn about different types of dementia. We even watched a video that was created to help viewers understand dementia from a first-person view, which really helped to create empathy. Also, things that may be seen as basic and common sense, like food safety, are instrumental to have knowledge of when caring for others, especially those who are vulnerable.

After another lovely lunch, we had a session on moving and handling, during which we learned how to use the hoist and practiced for situations where we will be needed to be moving or handling.

Day 3

Today’s schedule is packed with important tasks. First up, we have a Mobizio session with Debbie, to review the care planning app, which is crucial for documenting care notes, medication management, and more during every care visit.

Following that, we have a medication session with Liz and Yvonne, two Right at Home Solent CareGivers, where we cover the administration of medications, including types, precautions, and safety measures, as well as the necessary documentation.

After a well-deserved lunch break, we have another medication session with Liz and Yvonne. Later in the day, we do a Basic Life Support session with Liz and Yvonne to review essential life-saving skills. Finally, we go through the documentation to ensure that the induction paperwork is signed off by Ali!

The three days of the CareGiver induction are really valuable and insightful. I love that the office team is able to take part too. It's good to have an understanding of how the industry works when working for Right at Home, and what our CareGivers do.
