Working in the care industry can feel like a rollercoaster of emotions. Some days are undeniably challenging, leaving you questioning how to keep going. But then, there are moments that remind you exactly why you do what you do.
Recently, I had one of those moments while out with my manager, Kev, for some business development training. As the Marketing Assistant at Right at Home Solent, my role revolves around connecting with people in our community and spreading the word about the care we provide. It’s as much about building relationships as it is about marketing.
During the day, we stopped at Maurie’s sandwich shop in Southampton. Let me tell you - Kev wasn’t exaggerating when he said it’s the best around. It’s an easy 10/10 every time. While we waited for our order, Kev struck up a conversation with the staff, and started explaining what we do as a company.
That’s when Phoebe, a lovely woman standing behind us, said, “I think you cared for my Nan.” Hearing those words caught us off guard in the best way possible. As we started chatting, we learned that we had indeed cared for her Nan. Phoebe shared how much her Nan adored our CareGivers and how highly she spoke of the support we provided. Her Nan’s independence and ability to stay in her own home meant the world to their family.
Listening to Phoebe share her story was incredibly touching. It was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. The difference we make isn’t just for our clients; it’s for their families too.
As we continued talking, Phoebe mentioned something amazing. She told us that she owns Maurie’s, and the sandwich shop is named after her granddad, the husband of her Nan, who we cared for. It’s such a small world, and it was heart warming to know we had been a part of her family’s journey.
Sadly, Phoebe’s Nan passed away after moving into a care home, but her family remains deeply grateful for the time we supported her. Knowing we made a positive impact during such an important time in her life is what makes our work so meaningful.
If you’re ever in Southampton, I can’t recommend Maurie’s enough. It’s not just the food, which I will be going back to try, but the whole experience. It’s a place filled with warmth, connection, and stories waiting to be shared. And who knows who you might meet!
