We are used to helping others. But it’s not often the tables are turned. On this day in May, our carer was the one receiving the help.
Karren was helping place her food order. At 91, Margaret was still amazingly independent. She orders her own food from Waitrose, with just a little help from her carer.
“I want a souffle omelette” said Margaret, with an adamant look on her face.
“A what?” asked Karren.
“You know, a souffle omelette”.
Karren had heard of a souffle, and an omelette, but never the two together. You’d be forgiven for questioning if this was indeed a real thing. But, confused as she gets, Margaret loves her food.
They worked out the ingredients to a souffle omelette and placed the order.
A few days later, they were standing over the pans together, surrounded by the ingredients. Margaret showed her how to make a souffle omelette and Karren gratefully learnt something new.
Caring is typically a giving relationship – helping someone to do things they may struggle with otherwise. Today, it was Margaret’s turn to help Karren with something she couldn’t do alone.
Karren visited Margaret most days, and talks of the relationship as a genuine bond. But even this felt a bit special.
Take the time to get to know someone
Every person we see is different. They all have a story – their own experiences – we never take that for granted. The best thing we can do is get to know someone, really get to know them.
Even at 91, people can still surprise you. But more than that, the better you know someone, the more you can support them. And the more you can help them engage with the things they enjoy, and relive the memories they cherish.
If you’ve got a loved one who needs help, we’d love to get to know them better. Get in touch and let’s see how we can help.
