How the Support Those who are Alone This Christmas
The winter season and Christmas time can be bittersweet for many people. Although for the majority, December is all about celebrating the festivities with friends and family; for many people, particularly the elderly, it is a very lonely time. Everyone at Right at Home Solent would like to give some thought to those who might not enjoy this time of year. Recent research shows that in the UK, over half of people aged 75+ live on their own. As most of our clients are elderly, we see first-hand the impact that a lonely Christmas can have on them; we do everything we can to make our clients’ Christmas as special as possible.
Arrange a Visit With Us
Do you have any family members or neighbors in Fareham, Gosport, Southampton and New Forest East that you know might be alone this Christmas? If so, arrange a visit with them, even if it isn’t on Christmas Day, make some time for them over the festive period. Unfortunately, not everyone has family or friends to spend Christmas with, and for many, the 25th of December is just another day. Even something as simple as a Christmas card, a cup of tea and a chat with make an elderly person feel so much better.
Give Them a Call
If you are unable to visit a family member that is alone this Christmas, make time over the Christmas period to call to check up on them and have a catch up. A simple phone call can have a massive impact on anyone at any time of the year; but it is even more important over the festive period. Age UK have seen a significant increase in Depression and Anxiety in recent times, so they are encouraging everyone to make a visit, or a phone call, to those who might be spending a lot of their days alone this Christmas, so they know they are not forgotten.
Drive an Elderly Neighbour to an Event
Encourage someone you know to get out and about to events over the Festive season. By offering to drive them and stay there with them, it might be the nudge they need to overcome any anxieties they have about going out, especially on Christmas Day when transport is limited.
Help with Their Shopping
Even something simple as popping round to your elderly neighbour and offer to take them to a shop. Being elderly can often be lonely; they spend many hours at home, often on their own, just a trip out to the shops will make a difference to their day. However, if they are unable to get out, ask if there's anything they need and if you can get it for them.
Age UK is reaching out to everyone this winter to ask for their support so they can be there for even more older people. If you know someone that could benefit from their support, please help them get in touch. The difference they make really could be life changing.
