Flixton's History
Evidence of early inhabitants from the Neolithic Age and the Bronze Age with artefacts such as stone axes near the river Irwell and the River Mersey
Flixton Parish was one of the medieval parishes which existed in the Hundred of Salford. Manors of Urmson which were first mentioned between 1181 and 1189 which surrounded the Parish.
The boundaries of Flixton were unclear but they could of been set by a mixture of natural and man-made features such as Carr Ditch divided Flixton and Urmston.
During the Industrial Revolution, there was some evidence to suggest the area was used to produce textiles with "yarn croft" with the indication of flax production suggested by local documents.
Public rights of way campaigns played a major role in Flixtons History when a local squire Ralph Wright who lived in Flixton house attempted to shut down a road which went through his land. This was opposed by the local people this lead to the creation of "Manchester Association for the Preservation of Ancient Public Footpaths" which later became "Peak and Northern Footpath Society" which still exists today.
