Wythenshawe’s History
Coming from the old English word for withy tree, Wythenshawe is a combination of three ancient townships, Northenden, Baguley and Northen Etchells. Eventually, it was merged with Manchester in 1931 before then it had only been referred to as Wythenshawe Hall and its grounds.
Just south of Wythenshawe is Manchester Airport formerly known as Ringway. Before the planning of the Ringway three farm fields between Rackhouse Road and Wythenshawe Road in Northern Moor were made into the Manchester (Wythenshawe) Aerodrome.
The Aerodrom only operated from 1929 to 1930 with the last recorded flight being 19th June 1930.
