Activities to do with Elderly Dad’s

Published: 18/06/2016

Father’s day is tomorrow, there’s still time to do some last minute shopping to find the perfect card or make sure you get his favourite chocolates!

Although, spending money isn’t always needed, it’s a time to reflect on the bond between children and their dads and the time that Dad supported you, gave you a great memory or shared a moment.

It’s nice to take time out of your schedule and spend quality time with your Dad.

Are you looking for activities to do with your Elderly Dad? You may know that he’s keen to get out of the house, but outings with elderly parents may seem daunting.

Here are some ideas…

Drive him to a friend’s house. One of the toughest aspects of an elderly person’s life is if they can no longer drive, or don’t feel confident to drive. Team this with their friends feeling the same and isolation may be on the cards.

Take time to ask your Dad if he would like to be driven anywhere. To see an old friend, to visit the supermarket or maybe to the park to enjoy the fresh air.

Take him to a local sports event. Does your Dad love to watch sport on TV, did he used to play sport as a child? It’s great to take him out to a local league match, and of course treat him to a Bovril and hot dog at half time!

Cook a Sunday Dinner. When was the last time you and your family all got together and sat around a dining table fighting over who gets the last Yorkshire pudding? Your Dad may not be able to cook a full meal anymore, treat him to this great British Tradition. You will also be making sure that your Dad is getting a great nutritious meal and supporting him in his well-being.

Just a few tips to ensure a successful outing…

  1. If your Dad lives in an assisted living facility or Care Home, make sure you sign him out and that the CareGivers know of his whereabouts.
  2. Don’t plan a full day out, just a couple of hours will be enough, and not make Dad too tired.
  3. Plan time for your commute and day out. No one likes to feel rushed and panicked!
  4. Be mindful of any medication to take and the medication schedule, which needs to be followed.
  5. Knowing where toilets and public facilities are and that they are accessible to your Dad’s needs

We hope you and your Dad have a fantastic Day, however you choose to spend it!

Happy Father’s Day!
