Brief history of the area

Carshalton appears in the Domesday Book as Aultone. It was held by Goisfrid de Mandeville.

In the Domesday era there was a church and a water mill in Carshalton, which was then still made up of a few hamlets dotted around the area. In the Middle Ages the land in the village was generally farmed in the form of a number of open fields, divided into strips. 

Today Carshalton is a mixture of old and new, with upscale dining and hotels making for a very picturesque high street.

Honeywood Museum is a Grade II listed building overlooking Carshalton Ponds, and opposite the Greyhound Hotel, in the heart of Carshalton's historic Conservation Area. The Conservation Area is home to many buildings of historic significance due to their royal connections.

The building has dates back to the mid-17th century, with Victorian and Edwardian extensions, including a fine Billiard Room, Drawing Room and Victorian Scullery. Exhibitions are held telling the history of the house and the people who lived there from its origins in the Doomsday Book.

Did you know?

You can still find remnants of the past with Anne Boleyn’s well where  it is rumoured that a blow from the hoof of Anne Boleyn’s horse caused the spring, now dry, to rise.  

In his book History of the Worthies of England, the 17th century historian Thomas Fuller refers to Carshalton for its walnuts and trout.

All Saints Church. The existing church was extended by the Boulogne family in the late 12^th Century. Monuments include those to Nicholas Gaynesford, Sherrif of Surrey and Sussex; Sir William Scawen, Governor of the Bank of England, and Sir John Fellowes, Sub Governor of the South Sea Company.
