Brief history of the area
Chessington appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Cisedune. Its name came from Anglo-Saxon 'belonging to man named Cissa'.
Burnt Stub, the mansion at Chessington World of Adventures was built in 1348. In the English Civil War it became a royalist fortress and was razed to the ground by Cromwell's Parliamentary forces, giving it its modern name. The site subsequently became an inn and was rebuilt from the 18th century by the Vere Barker family.
Reginald Goddard turned the 65-acre grounds into a zoo in 1931. It is now operated as a theme park.
