Duke of Wellington Pub East Horsley

Brief history of the area

East Horsley appears in  the Domesday Book of 1086 as having two manors, listed under the chief manor's heading of Horslei. This was held by Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury. The Bishop's Manor in East Horsley seems to have belonged to the See of Exeter throughout the Middle Ages.

The main row of shops is near the western railway station on a local thoroughfare from the end of Forest Road towards Ockham. A small number of businesses operate here, including accountants, opticians and the NHS medical practice.

On the road towards Guildford the medieval church, St Martin's, is part of the Diocese of Guildford. The Duke of Wellington pub is a firm favourite among the locals and attracts visitors from all over the county.

Horsley Towers is a country house dating back to the 19th Century that is now run as part of the De Vere hotel group. De Vere Horsley Estate has history and heritage at every turn. Designed and built in 1820 by Sir Charles Barry; the architect of the Houses of Parliament, the house was later the seat of the Lovelace family who enhanced it with the bold architectural features that can still be seen throughout.
